Phone & contactless

What is Tap to Pay and how does it work?

Understand Tap to Pay for businesses: the merchant’s phone, the customer’s card, the app and how it differs from Apple Pay or a QR code.

Prepared

The essentials

Tap to Pay lets a business accept contactless payments directly on a compatible phone using a supported payment app. The customer presents a bank card or mobile wallet. The merchant’s phone acts as the contactless reader.

Two people, two roles

As the business, you prepare the amount in the merchant app. Your customer checks it and presents their payment method where indicated. They do not need to dictate a card number to you.

“Phone to phone” describes just one possibility. A contactless bank card can also be used, so two phones are not required.

Tap to Pay versus Apple Pay

Tap to Pay describes payment acceptance on the merchant side. Apple Pay and other wallets let customers pay using a device. These are complementary roles, not two names for the same service.

The tap is not the confirmation

After the card is read, check the result in the app. A vibration or the card approaching the device is not enough to prove payment. If the result is uncertain, look up the transaction before starting another attempt.

A contactless reading also does not mean the funds have already reached your bank account. Customer payment and the payout to the business are separate stages.

What to check before choosing

Compatibility depends on the device, the app and the country of use. Check the provider’s rules for accepted cards, connectivity and any PIN prompts. One app’s requirements do not automatically apply to another.

In practice

What to say to your customer

“You can pay contactless here, on my phone.” That is often enough: customers do not need to know the term Tap to Pay to understand what to do.
