Tap to Pay on Android: is your phone compatible?
NFC, Android version, security and payment app: what to check before accepting card payments on an Android smartphone.
Prepared

The essentials
An Android phone with NFC is not automatically compatible with Tap to Pay. Providers also set requirements for the operating system, security and sometimes the model. Check your chosen app’s conditions before buying a device or relying on it to take payments.
Each solution has its own requirements
An NFC logo alone does not guarantee payment acceptance. For example, the Stripe documentation reviewed requires Android 13 or later, NFC, a stable connection and an unmodified device meeting its security requirements. This is not a universal list and is not Blaya’s compatibility list.
Record the full model reference, Android version and security patch date. Two phones that look alike can have different specifications depending on their variant.
NFC reads the card; it does not activate the account
Enabling NFC in settings does not create a payment acceptance agreement. You still need a supported app and a merchant account authorised to accept payments. Google Wallet, used for paying, is also different from an app for taking payments.
Locate the reading area
Antenna placement varies by phone. Follow the marker in the app, hold the card still for the requested time and avoid presenting multiple cards together. If reading fails, check the provider’s guidance about cases or accessories.
A bank decline is not a positioning problem. If a card is read and then declined, check the result and offer another method where needed rather than repeatedly tapping without understanding the status.
Prepare for business use
Plan for screen locking, updates and charging. If several people take payments, use individual accounts and a process for removing access when a device or team member changes. Sharing a personal phone without clear rules makes tracking harder.
In practice
Before buying a phone
Give the provider the exact model reference you are considering and ask for confirmation of support. A retail listing that says “NFC” is not enough to base a business equipment purchase on.
