Tap to Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay: who takes payment?

The merchant uses Tap to Pay; the customer can use a card or wallet. Understand the roles behind contactless payments.

The essentials

Tap to Pay accepts a payment on the professional’s phone. Apple Pay and Google Pay let customers present a card through their device. A wallet is therefore not compulsory: a contactless bank card supported by the solution can also work.

Your acceptance tool and their payment method

You open the business app, enter the amount and present your phone. The customer chooses from supported payment methods. They may use a different device from yours; there is no need to share an account or install your app.

In customer communication, start with “Pay contactless here” rather than a list of technologies. Technical names remain useful for specific compatibility questions.

An online wallet button is a different flow

On a checkout opened from a link, a wallet may be offered where supported by the provider, browser and device. The customer taps a button and follows verification. They do not hold their phone near the merchant’s.

Do not promise the same button to every customer: visible options depend on context. The useful reference is the list actually shown at checkout.

A mobile wallet does not create a merchant account

Adding your own card to a wallet lets you pay. It is not enough to receive customer payments. Acceptance requires a business solution and its activation, separate from your personal wallet.

In your records, also distinguish the payment source from its method: a payment can originate from a link and be completed with a wallet. Those fields describe different aspects of one transaction.

In practice

The simplest question

“Would you prefer to use your card or your phone?” When both are supported, this is clearer to the customer than asking whether they know Tap to Pay.
