Payment QR code or link not working: what to check

Identify whether scanning, connectivity or the payment request is the problem, then offer a solution without creating a duplicate.

The essentials

A payment QR code generally opens a link. If scanning fails, first check the image and camera. If the page opens but payment is unavailable, check the request and enabled methods. If the customer has already tried to pay, check the transaction before sending a new request.

The phone does not recognise the QR

Make sure the code is complete, sharp and sufficiently contrasted, with a visible margin. Distorted printing, reflective glass or a dark screen can interfere with scanning. Try a different distance and another device.

Keep the text link available as an alternative. This helps distinguish a scanning issue from a checkout issue.

The link opens an unavailable page

Check the full address, connection and request status in your tool. Reprinting the same QR does not fix a disabled or expired request. If you replace it, remove the old code so customers do not keep using it.

The page works, but payment fails

At this point, the QR has done its job. Check the payment status and message without asking the customer for bank details. Printing or scanning again will not resolve a card decline.

If the outcome is uncertain, find the first attempt before offering another method. The aim is to help the customer pay once, not multiply requests.

In practice

Check before printing

Scan the final printed version and compare the page with the original link: business name, description and amount. Testing only the file on your computer does not check the quality of the actual poster.
